Minor hockey is built on development, teamwork, and community. Recently, there have been instances where conduct from the stands and benches have crossed the line. We want to remind everyone that our players, coaches, and officials deserve a safe and respectful environment at every game.
Hockey is emotional. It is competitive, fast paced, and sometimes frustrating. That is part of the game. However, there is a clear difference between passion and inappropriate behaviour.
Our association has zero tolerance for abuse directed toward:
-
Referees and officials
-
Opposing players
-
Opposing coaches
-
Volunteers
-
Fellow parents
Officials are human. Many are young, developing, and learning the game just like our players. Without them, there is no hockey. Mistakes will happen. Judgment calls will not always go your way. That is part of sport.
When adults yell at officials, mock players, or escalate situations from the stands, several things happen:
-
Our children see it and learn from it
-
Officials leave the game, worsening the referee shortage
-
Our association risks fines, suspensions, or loss of ice privileges
-
The focus shifts away from development and toward conflict
That is not who we are, and it is not what we want our program to represent.
We expect all spectators and bench staff to:
-
Remain respectful at all times
-
Refrain from yelling at officials
-
Avoid engaging with opposing teams or benches
-
Address concerns through proper channels after the game
If concerns arise regarding officiating or game management, they must be directed to the appropriate convenor or board member. Confrontations at the rink will not be tolerated.
Please remember: these are children playing a game. The goal is development, confidence, and enjoyment. Winning is secondary.
Moving forward, any incidents of spectator misconduct may result in removal from the arena and further disciplinary action under association and OMHA policies.
Let’s set the example our players deserve.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping our arena a safe and positive environment for everyone.
